SPONSOR A BABY BIRD SERIES: AMERICAN ROBIN
Destined to Fly specializes in caring for baby migratory songbirds. Each year we raise about 100 songbirds who, for some reason, have lost their parents. It takes 10 weeks to prepare them to survive once they are released.
Initially they must be fed every 15-20 minutes. Since their parents would have fed them insects, we feed them a 100% live insects along with supplements formulated by a Wildlife Nutritionist. Once the nestlings leave the nest they are given live insects and other natural foods that they will find in the wild, to allow them to practice hunting for food. They then go into aviaries where they will experience natural outside noises, various weather also be able to see the stars that they will need to see when they migrate. In the wild they would learn by observing their parents. In foster care we need to allow them to figure it out for themselves. We provide the scenarios and the safety that allows them to do that.
It costs $100 to feed each bird. Over the next few months we will be sharing photos and videos of the species that we cared for in 2018 and are likely to care for in 2019. We take these photos to help us improve the care of the baby birds, help other songbird rehabbers to care for baby birds and to share with rescuers and our supporters.
We need the public's help if we are to continue. Please consider Sponsoring a baby American Robin.
